Dan Persons: Mighty Movie Podcast: Writer Katie Dippold on The Heat

2013-06-30-The_Heat_DF05582_R2_rgb_410.jpgSo in the midst of the interstellar conflicts, zombie plagues, and giant robots, how about a summer movie that's a little more grounded? How about Sandra Bullock as a Type A, by-the-book FBI agent clashing up against Melissa McCarthy as a loose-cannon Boston police detective as they try to take down a drug lord? The Heat isn't shy about acknowledging its debts to the buddy-cop comedies of yore, but throws in a few, gender-twisted wrinkles all its own (you never saw Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte in a drunken hug-dance, did you?).

Writer Katie Dippold makes her feature film debut with The Heat, after logging time on the writing staffs of MADtv and Parks and Recreation. I sat down with her to discuss her spin on this hallowed genre, and her experience working on-set with director Paul Feig.

Parental Guidance: White House Down and A Band Called Death

50%

Rating: PG-13, for prolonged sequences of action and violence including intense gunfire and explosions, some language and a brief sexual image.

Yet another White-House-under-siege movie? So soon? Just a few months after the release of Olympus Has Fallen, our nation's capital once again is being attacked on screen. The difference is, that film was rated R, so you saw the physical consequence of massive gun battles. The PG-13 White House Down has the kind of insane violence you'd expect from director Roland Emmerich -- both up-close-and-personal shootings in close quarters and barrages of automatic gunfire from the skies -- but with barely any blood. It's just as numbing but not nearly so gruesome. More troubling to me, as a mom, was watching Joey King, as Channing Tatum's 11-year-old daughter, being used as a pawn -- seeing her roughed up by bad guys, including having a gun placed to her head several times. She's a tough girl capable of standing up for herself, but the extent to which the villains abuse her as a source of audience thrills seemed gratuitous and made me uneasy. Whether or not these images disturb older kids, they'll likely bother their parents. Also: Jamie Foxx, as the Obamaesque president, drops the one F-bomb you get with a PG-13 rating.

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (147) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (144) | Rotten (3)

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.

Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.

Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.

"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

I'm not sure this is the end of Richard Linklater's 'Before' trilogy. It's perfection just as it is, but then again, Linklater has nine more years to work on the sequel.

Loving words mix with personal attacks, the magic moments with the unintended slights, as we witness the occasional desperation of imperfect people doing the best they can when life moves beyond meet-cute and courtship. That's authentic.

Linklater and his players bring an end to the fantasy and welcome the thrilling ups and bitter downs of reality to this love story.

Like the first two films, it reflects the real world in a way that seems almost preternatural. It's just that, here, the real world is a harsher, more disappointing place.

The duo, clearly so comfortable in their characters' skin, indulge in intelligent banter, sharp humour and emotional truths.

So much better written than contemporary novels, this film is a literary as well as cinematic achievement to cherish. For grown-ups.

As before, it's often very funny, with Jesse and Celine swapping Woody Allen-esque one-liners - nicely snarky, appealingly abrasive.

The acting, the dialogue and direction are superb.

None of the films is faultless in itself, but, tinted with complementary tones, the complete cycle comes as close to perfection as any trilogy in cinema history.

Marvelous. It's impossible to shake the feeling that we are merely eavesdropping on reality. Witty, wise, and -- most important of all -- truly romantic in ways that movies usually aren't.

It's been 18 years since Hawke, Delpy and Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, and their story just gets richer, funnier and more punchy each time we see them. In 1995's Before Sunrise, they were idealistic 23-year-olds.

Hawke and Delpy are as believably real as any screen couple can ever be.

This is one of the few sequels for which the cliche 'eagerly awaited' is truly applicable.

Predictably, it's just as great as the first two.

By the end, Before Midnight inches towards a dawn of charm. But it's a troubled trip.

As an organic experiment in collaboration between actors and director, it is a triumph, co-created and co-owned by Delpy, Linklater and Hawke.

Hawke and Delpy, who are both credited on the script too, have never found co-stars to bounce off more nimbly or bring out richer nuances in their acting.

The performances and dialogue are wonderfully naturalistic; a reminder that the best special effects are often the cheapest.

Before Midnight is about the nature of long-term relationships, and the way love deepens and grows but also finds itself subject to the complications of maturity. Smart, insightful, and poignant.

For those who witnessed Jesse and Celine's tentative getting together as inter railing students almost twenty years ago, it's reassuring to see them still in love.

Museum visitors can 'unwrap' a mummy

A museum in Sweden will digitise its mummy collection in 3D to allow visitors to unwrap a real mummy in digital form.

The mummies from Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm will be digitised by technology which uses photos and X-ray scans to create 3D models.

The permanent exhibition is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014.

The curators hope it will help visitors gain a deeper understanding into the lives of ancient Egyptian people.

The museum will scan six mummies using a process called reality capture technology, where high-resolution 3D digital models can be made by compiling data from photos and X-ray scans.

Museum visitors will be able to explore the mummies in a way similar to what archaeologists do when they are looking for novel discoveries from ancient remains.

Journey through the underworld

  • When ancient Egyptians died they believed they were setting off on a journey to the afterlife
  • It was believed preserving the body through mummification would help them to travel there
  • The soul had to make a dangerous journey through the underworld and overcome demons using magic
  • Once there they would be judged by Osiris, lord of the underworld
  • If judged to be good their soul would reunite with their body and they could live in paradise for eternity

"We aim to set a new standard for how museums work with 3D digitisation and interactive visualisation to make collections more accessible to other museums, researchers and museum visitors," said Thomas Rydell of the Swedish Interactive Institute.

"In this project we are working with mummies, but the same methods could of course be used on large variety of objects, such as natural history objects and other historical artefacts."

The museum visitors will be able to zoom into very high resolution to see details like carving marks on a sarcophagus. They will also be able to "unwrap" a mummy by peeling off virtual layers of the wrapping to explore the artefacts buried with the body.

"We can literately create a virtual copy of the mummy. This version could be shared with other museums, be used for research or be part of an interactive visitor experience," added Mr Rydell.

The work is a collaboration between Swedish visualisation researchers, Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm and two technology companies, Autodesk and Faro.

"The technology will enable our visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the men and women inside the mummy wrappings," said Elna Nord, producer of the exhibition.

"Layer by layer, the visitor can unwrap the mummy and gain knowledge of the individual's sex, age, living conditions and beliefs. With help from the technology, the mummies become so much stronger mediators of knowledge of our past."

Unity game engine to support Xbox One, gets a boost on Windows 8 and Windows Phone

Unity engine comes to Xbox One with support for Kinect and SmartGlass

When the Unity game engine runs virtually everywhere -- well, almost -- it's no surprise that Unity Technologies has just announced that the engine will support the Xbox One. However, the firm is also revealing a partnership with Microsoft that promises a deeper level of integration on the One than we've seen on some other systems. Microsoft Studios partners will get to build Unity-based Xbox 360 and Xbox One games for free. They'll also receive tools that take full advantage of the One's tricks, including cloud computing, matchmaking, improved Kinect gestures and SmartGlass.

Developers who aren't console-inclined are covered as well: the partnership will give all Unity Pro 4 customers free access to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 development add-ons once they're available this summer. While there's no guarantee that game producers are more likely to target Microsoft's ecosystem than they have in the past, the Unity deal could lower some of the costs and technology barriers. And there may be more: Microsoft has dropped hints that it will provide further details on its support of indie console app development sometime in the near future.

Internet Is Making Car Shopping More Efficient As Role Of Tr

27 Jun, 2013

ATLANTA, June 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ ? According to a new study commissioned by AutoTrader.com?, the Internet is making car shopping more efficient. The 2013 Polk Automotive Buyer Influence Study revealed that the amount of time consumers spend shopping for a car has decreased dramatically in the last two years; however, the percentage of their shopping time that is spent online has increased substantially.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110425/CL88097LOGO)

First conducted in 2011 and then fielded again in 2013, the study showed that new car buyers who used the Internet in the shopping process reported spending 13.75 hours shopping for a vehicle, a decrease of 5.25 hours since 2011. Similarly, used car buyers who used the Internet during the shopping process spent 15.25 hours shopping, a decrease of 2.75 hours since 2011.

Although consumers are spending less time shopping overall, they are spending a greater percentage of their shopping time online than they were in 2011. Previously, buyers spent an average of 60 percent of their shopping time online, but that percentage increased to 75 percent in 2013 (77 percent for new car buyers and 73 percent for used car buyers). These changes were likely driven by several factors, including the improved quality and quantity of listings, as well as better merchandising online, greater use of mobile devices and also macro factors such as the continually improving economy.

?When we commissioned the first study a few years ago, the economy wasn?t as strong as it is now, and we believe that shoppers were being much more cautious, taking longer before arriving at their final purchase decision,? said Kevin Filan, vice president of customer marketing and industry relations at AutoTrader Group. ?Now that the economy is stronger, buyers are taking less time overall, but they are devoting more of that time to shopping online. This is significant, as it points to the increasing influence of the Internet during the shopping process.?

The study also revealed that the role of traditional media in the shopping process has decreased notably. Though all forms of traditional media showed decreases in usage, the biggest declines in usage of traditional media during the shopping process for both new and used car buyers were seen in print newspapers, television and direct mail.

  • For new car buyers, use of television showed the biggest decline, going from 34 percent in 2011 to 22 percent in 2013. Close behind was print newspaper, which dropped from 28 percent in 2011 to 18 percent in 2013. Use of direct mail went from 16 percent in 2011 to 8 percent in 2013.
  • For used car buyers, use of television also exhibited the biggest decline, though the decrease was slightly less pronounced. Use of television by used car buyers went from 18 percent in 2011 to 12 percent in 2013. Use of print newspaper went from 26 percent in 2011 to 17 percent in 2013, and use of direct mail went from nine percent in 2011 to 4 percent in 2013.

?While dealers, OEMs and their advertising agencies have shifted more money into online advertising, there is still a large imbalance in the allocation between traditional and digital mediums,? Filan continued. ?We know from the study that buyers who use the Internet are spending the most time on third-party sites, so dealers and automakers should ensure they are marketing their brands, their dealerships and their inventory where the active car shoppers are going online. And with continued double digit traffic growth and our largest traffic months in our history taking place in the first half of this year, AutoTrader.com is more relevant than any time in our 15 year history of making car buying and selling easier.?

In addition to the key stats mentioned above, the study also found that:

  • Three-quarters of car buyers indicate that they used the Internet during the shopping process, making it the most used source.
  • Among Internet users, 62 percent of used car buyers and 47 percent of new car buyers indicated that the Internet was the primary source that led them to the dealership where they bought a car, which was more than fifteen times that of any other media source cited in the study.
  • The rise in Internet usage was driven primarily by domestic and luxury buyers, who turned to the Internet in greater numbers in 2013 versus 2011.
  • New car buyers use the Internet more to find special offers while used buyers look for actual vehicles for sale to a greater extent.
  • Approximately two out of three of all car buyers do not contact the dealership prior to their first visit, with 62 percent of used car buyers and 67 percent of new car buyers citing ?walked in? as the most common method of establishing initial contact with the dealer.

The 2013 Polk Automotive Buyer Influence Study, commissioned by AutoTrader.com, was conducted among over 2700 car buyers and ran from December 2012 through April 2013. Ninety percent of buyers who were surveyed purchased a vehicle in the six months preceding their participation. The study used a combination of online and offline survey methods, resulting in a large, random representative sample of online and offline car buyers.

Iraq official says Baghdad open to US military aid

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq is open to greater American military cooperation as U.S. commanders explore ways to boost security assistance to the country, a top Iraqi official said Thursday as a fresh wave of bombings claimed 16 lives.

The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, has recommended that military American commanders look for ways to help improve the military capabilities of Iraq and Lebanon, which both face the risk of spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Dempsey said Wednesday that the assistance would not involve sending U.S. combat troops, but could involve the U.S. sending in training teams and accelerating sales of weapons and equipment.

The last American combat troops left Iraq in December 2011, ending a nearly nine-year war that cost nearly 4,500 American and more than 100,000 Iraqi lives.

About 100 military and civilian Department of Defense personnel remain in Iraq as an arm of the American Embassy to act as liaisons with the Iraqi government and facilitate arms sales. The U.S. has similar offices in other countries.

Ali al-Moussawi, the media adviser for Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, told The Associated Press that Baghdad would welcome increased arms sales and faster weapons deliveries along with U.S. training teams to help it confront rising regional instability and terrorist threats.

"We welcome this kind of cooperation and we consider it a part of the existing agreement between us," al-Moussawi said when asked about Dempsey's comments.

"Because of the high risks the region faces, I think there should be bigger cooperation and coordination between all countries threatened by terrorism."

Iraq is struggling to contain a resurgent al-Qaida that is one of the main drivers behind the country's worst uptick in violence in half a decade. More than 2,000 people have been killed in car bombings and other violent attacks in Iraq since the start of April.

More violence rocked Iraq late Thursday when bombs struck cafes in and around Baghdad, killing 16 and wounding dozens. The attacks struck in quick succession at the start of the local weekend while the cafes were filled with patrons watching a soccer match.

Police reported five people killed and 17 wounded in Baghdad's largely Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah, and another three dead and 14 wounded in Shiite-dominated Umm al-Maalif, in the southwestern suburbs of the capital.

Another blast struck the Shiite town of Jbala, about 50 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad, killing 8 and wounding 25.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to journalists.

The upsurge in violence comes as Iraqi fighters have been traveling to fight on both sides of Syria's civil war. The Iraqi branch of al-Qaida is pushing to make itself a player in the conflict, and now calls itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to highlight its cross-border ambitions.

Iraq has acquired billions of dollars' worth of American-made military equipment, including howitzers, armored personnel carriers and Abrams tanks in recent years.

It has yet to receive the first of as many as 36 F-16 fighter jets it has ordered, and Baghdad has been pressing U.S. officials to speed delivery of the warplanes.

Also on Thursday, a spokesman for Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission said a voting list backed by influential Sunni politicians has won the biggest single bloc of seats in provincial elections in the Sunni-dominated province of Anbar.

Safaa al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the Independent High Electoral commission, said the United list led by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi won 8 of 30 seats in Anbar's provincial council. A bloc backed by al-Maliki came in second with five seats.

The western province of Anbar, a former al-Qaida stronghold, has been the center of anti-government rallies protesting what Sunnis say is their second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government.

Residents in Anbar and neighboring Ninevah province voted last week in local elections that had been delayed due to security concerns.

Today's Phones and Tablets Will Die Out Like the PC ...

The personal computer is dying. Its place in our lives as the primary means of computing will soon end. Mobile computing?the cell phone in your pocket or the tablet in your purse?has been a great bridging technology, connecting the familiar past to a formative future. But mobile is not the destination. In many ways mobile devices belong more to the dying PC model than to the real future of computing.

Instead, the future of computing is at a very large scale. I am not referring to the room-size monstrosities from computing?s dawn in the 1960s. I?m talking about a diffuse and invisible network embedded in our surroundings. Chips and sensors are finding their way?into clothing, personal accessories, and more. These devices are capturing information whose impact is not yet meaningful to most people. But it will be soon enough. The question we need to answer is: how?will these intertwined systems of hardware and software be designed to?meaningfully add to our lives and to society?

Today we are enjoying what computing has done to enhance our lives, but we do not like having to baby-sit all the devices that give us access.?We have to tell them what to do. The next wave of computing devices will be different because they won?t wait for our instructions. They will feel more like natural extensions of what we do in our lives. The hardware and software technologies behind this ubiquitous-computing model will become the focus of a radically changed computing industry.

These technologies will also change the way we look at computers. For example, making payments through a smartphone requires that the user unlock the phone, swipe to find the application, launch the application, and then initiate the payment?function. But a smart watch could be designed to initiate a payment when you tap it on a payment terminal. There are so many of these ordinary?functions that can be enhanced by computers but should not involve the overhead of operating a computer.

I?m excited by the various wrist-worn health monitors that have come out recently, like the Nike Fuel Band. On the downside, they represent a certain narcissistic fad: the constant monitoring of oneself. But aside from that, the idea that we are beginning to instrument our bodies and make them nodes on the network opens the opportunity to truly improve how we manage our health, how we assist the elderly, and?how we express ourselves socially.

I was a teenager when Apple came out with the Apple II. For most people it was a toy,?something useful only to hobbyists. But it pointed the way toward much more capable computers. The same thing is happening again with new types of?computers like the Fuel Band. None are really life-changing yet; they are still toys. But I can see that we will get to something profound very soon. ?

Because these new forms of personal computing radically minimize the user interface and?integrate it into more of our natural behaviors, they can be activated by more subtle means such as tapping?on objects or speaking. Or a device could recognize objects on its own and react accordingly.

For designers, the challenge is finding ways to carry out basic tasks such as reading messages, making payments, delivering alerts, and finding places without keyboards, high-res screens, and other features of the user interface as we?ve known it. To do this, they are simplifying tasks to their essence and creating new?styles of interaction. For example, a function might be executed by tapping and speaking at the same time, or through natural gestures such as near-field ?waving.?

The result should be a world where we have more pervasive access to computers yet fewer moments in our lives where we have?to stop what we?re doing and operate a computer terminal. Essentially, we hope to take the computers out of computing.

Mark Rolston is chief creative officer at Frog Design, a San Francisco?based design firm whose clients have included Sony, Louis Vuitton, Apple, and Disney.?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela's condition in a Pretoria hospital remained critical for a second straight day Monday, said South Africa's president who described the stricken anti-apartheid hero as being "asleep" when he visited Mandela the previous evening

President Jacob Zuma told at least 60 foreign and South African journalists that doctors are doing everything possible to ensure the 94-year-old's wellbeing and comfort on his 17th day in the hospital. The president repeated some of the content of a presidential statement issued on Sunday and refused to give any details about Mandela's condition, saying: "I'm not a doctor."

"Madiba is critical in the hospital, and this is the father of democracy. This is the man who fought and sacrificed his life to stay in prison, the longest-serving prisoner in South Africa. He is one of those who has contributed to democracy," Zuma said, using Mandela's clan name. "All of us in the country should accept the fact that Madiba is now old. As he ages, his health will ... trouble him and I think what we need to do as a country is to pray for him."

Zuma, who in the past has given an overly sunny view of Mandela's health, briefly described his visit to the hospital in the capital and seeing Mandela.

"It was late, he was already asleep," Zuma said. "And we then had a bit of a discussion with the doctors as well as his wife, Graca Machel, and we left."

Asked why none of Mandela's doctors had been made available for a news briefing, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said an arrangement had been made in consultation with Mandela's family whereby information would be provided through a "single source in an authoritative way."

"We've come to that arrangement on the basis that we need to respect the privacy of the family, we need to adhere to doctor-patient confidentiality," he said.

"You can be assured that what we are saying is based on agreement with the doctors," Maharaj said. Doctors approve the text of announcements on Mandela's health, and believe some media reporting has transgressed professional ethics, he said.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994, was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. This is his fourth hospitalization since December.

Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and was released 23 years ago, in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to an all-race democracy, becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994.

As a result of his sacrifice and peacemaking efforts, he is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation.

NetNewsWire 4 enters open beta, gives Mac owners a new, local RSS reader option

As Google Reader's closing in on the end of its days, a spate of new RSS aggregators have popped up to replace it. Sure, web-based readers from AOL, Digg or Feedly could do the trick, but what if you want your RSS stored locally? You're in luck, because one of the elder statesmen in the RSS world, NetNewsWire, has what you need with its version 4 open beta. This new beta is a more refined version of NetNewsWire 4 Lite, which was released in 2011, and will allow folks to pull down all their GReader archives and store them locally for free while it's in beta. The catch? You've gotta be running Mac OS X 10.7.3 or later, and while the beta's free for now, the software will cost you once it's final -- $10 dollars for those who pre-order, and $20 after that.

How To Appeal Your Idaho Property Tax Bill - Front Street Brokers

Taxation How To Appeal Your Idaho Property Tax Bill

June 24th, 2013 (Monday) is the deadline to submit your appeal for your property tax assessments for 2013. ?If you are an Idaho Property owner you were mailed a valuation of your home in late May, early June, based on January 1st of the year. ?This assessment of value from the county assessor?s office can change every year based how home values are doing in your neighborhood.

Since home prices are on the rise in many locations across the state, you should look at this tax assessment closely. If you feel the value they have place on your home is too low, then do nothing and keep quite about it (enjoy it while it lasts). ?However, if your home is being over valued then you have the right and ability to call your tax assessor?s office talk to them about your assessment.

HOW TO APPEAL YOUR IDAHO TAX ASSESSMENT

1. ?Contact your favorite, knowledgeable real estate agent, and have them do a quick check on value of your home based on Jan 1st of the year. ?Many agents make the mistake of showing the value today, but the assessor?s office is trying to prove value as of Jan 1st, and therefore will not accept comps selling today.

2. ?If your realtor can show you proof that your home is indeed, being over assessed then you should call your tax assessors office right away. ?The number to call is right on your tax assessment. ?Share with them the findings from your Realtor. ?Remember that home valuations are subjective. ?It depends a lot on which comps are being used to determine value. ?If the tax assessor shares with you comps that your realtor did not show you, then make a note of that, because your agent will need that property info to see if they can dispute those comps for any reason.

If you provide compelling evidence for the tax appraiser, and they agree with the over assessment, then they have the ability to make a change right then and there if they agree with the information you have presented. ?However, if you are not that lucky, and they don?t agree to change your valuation, hope is not lost. ?

3. ?In the State of Idaho, you can file an Appeal against your property assessment. ?The process is not difficult, but there is a deadline. ?You must submit your appeal by the 4th Monday in June (June 24th, 2013!). ?Call the assessors office as ask for the form. ?Some county assessors offices have the form on their website where you can download it. Here is a link to Ada County Appeal Form?or just got their website: http://AdaWeb.net. This will establish a court date when you will have an opportunity to further make your case. ?Be sure to lean on your favorite realtor for plenty of documentation to support your claim. ?If your home is being drastically over assessed this will be worth it. ?If is just marginally over assessed then it is probably not worth the fight.

You only have one time a year when you can appeal your property tax assessments, so make sure you don?t get caught off guard. ?Also, this process only addresses property assessments, not property tax amounts. ?Your home assessment is calculated into your tax levy. ?Your tax levy is determine by the tax districts and county commissioners. ?Each county has multiple tax districts and meetings throughout the summer where the tax levy?s are discussed and determined. ?You have the right to attend and speak at these meetings, so if you are concerned about something, attend and speak up.

If you have more questions about property taxes, or need market assessment on your home. Just call me at 208-340-8399.

Report: Jan Ullrich admits blood doping

(AP) ? A German magazine is reporting that 1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has admitted receiving blood-doping treatment from Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

Ullrich was quoted Saturday as saying in an interview with the weekly Focus that almost everyone was using performance-enhancing substances and he wanted to ensure "equality of opportunities."

Asked if he only engaged in blood doping, Ullrich says "the doctor's diagnosis says that."

In February 2012, the Court of Arbitration for Sport banned Ullrich for two years for blood doping, finding that he was "fully engaged" in Fuentes' drug program. At the time, the retired racer said he had "contact" with Fuentes but didn't directly acknowledge doping.

He didn't contest the CAS ruling, saying he wanted to "put an end to the issue."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Friday plans to nominate President George W. Bush's former No. 2 at the Justice Department, Jim Comey, to lead the FBI as the agency grapples with privacy debates over a host of recently exposed investigative tactics.

If confirmed by the Senate, Comey would serve a 10-year tenure and replace Robert Mueller, who has held the job since the week before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Mueller is set to resign on Sept. 4 after overseeing the bureau's transformation into one the country's chief weapons against terrorism.

The White House said in a statement that Obama would announce his choice of Comey on Friday afternoon.

Comey was a federal prosecutor who severed for several years as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before coming to Washington after the Sept. 11 attacks as deputy attorney general. In recent years he's been an executive at defense company Lockheed Martin, general counsel to a hedge fund, board member at HSBC Holdings and lecturer on national security law at Columbia Law School.

The White House may hope that Comey's Republican background and strong credentials will help him through Senate confirmation at a time when some of Obama's nominees have been facing tough battles. Republicans have said they see no major obstacles to his confirmation, although he is certain to face tough questions about his hedge fund work, his ties to Wall Street as well as how he would handle current, high-profile FBI investigations.

The FBI is responsible for both intelligence and law enforcement with more than 36,000 employees. It has faced questions in recent weeks over media leak probes involving The Associated Press and Fox News; the Boston Marathon bombings; the attack at Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans; and two vast government surveillance programs into phone records and online communications.

The leaker of those National Security Agency programs, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. And just this week Mueller revealed the FBI uses drones for surveillance of stationary subjects and said the privacy implications of such operations are worthy of debate.

Comey played a central role in holding up Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, one of the administration's great controversies and an episode that focused attention on the administration's controversial tactics in the war on terror.

In dramatic testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought the no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that he refused for a time to reauthorize it, leading to a standoff with White House officials at the hospital bedside of an ailing Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Comey said he refused to recertify the program because Ashcroft had reservations about its legality.

Senior government officials had expressed concerns about whether the NSA, which administered the warrantless eavesdropping program, had the proper oversight in place. Other concerns included whether any president possessed the legal and constitutional authority to authorize the program as it was carried out at the time.

Comey was deputy attorney general in 2005 when he unsuccessfully tried to limit tough interrogation tactics against suspected terrorists. He told then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that some of the practices were wrong and would damage the department's reputation.

Some Democrats denounced those methods as torture, particularly the use of waterboarding, which produces the sensation of drowning.

As U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Comey headed one of the nation's most prominent prosecutorial offices and one at the front lines in the fight against terrorism, corporate malfeasance, organized crime and the war on drugs.

As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, Comey handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. military personnel.

He led the Justice Department's corporate fraud task force and spurred the creation of violent crime impact teams in 20 cities, focusing on crimes committed with guns.

After leaving government in 2005, Comey was senior vice president and general counsel at Lockheed Martin. In 2010, he went to the Westport, Conn.-based hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, before leaving in February.

The White House also said Comey has developed improvements in the military justice system's performance regarding crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the Defense Legal Policy Board, which provides independent advice to the defense secretary.

Comey also has taught at the University of Richmond Law School and worked for law firm McGuireWoods LLP, also in Richmond. He has a bachelor's degree from the College of William & Mary, a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School and clerked for former District Court Judge John M. Walker, Jr. in the Southern District of New York.
