The American Red Cross was hit last month with a $10-million fine from the Food and Drug Administration, which in levying the penalty criticized the charity for repeated safety violations and lax oversight in its blood services, according to ProPublica.
In a 32-page letter to the organization the FDA detailed hundreds of violations over several months in 2010 at 16 Red Cross sites nationwide, including ineffective screening of blood donors and failure to recall infected blood.
These and other violations have cropped up in repeated investigations since 2003, when a federal court gave the FDA the authority to impose financial penalties on the charity. The Red Cross has been fined $46-million since then.
In a statement, the Red Cross expressed disappointment at being penalized for ?an inspection conducted so long ago? and said it has ?already taken corrective steps? to address the problems cited. A spokeswoman for the charity told ProPublica there is no evidence the violated cited endangered patients.
